SHOUT Canada, as it currently exists, was founded in a living room in Kigali, Rwanda, by four Canadians in June 2009. These Canadians were in Rwanda, laying the groundwork for SHOUT Canada’s flagship program, Reflections on Rwanda (ROR). Today, SHOUT Canada is a Canadian not for profit organization, dedicated to creating innovative and educational genocide-related programming for Canadian students and young professionals.
The original organization, called Students Helping Others Understand Tolerance, SHOUT, was founded in 2005 by alumni of the March of Remembrance and Hope and March of the Living programs. These programs take students to Germany and Poland on a unique journey both to witness the atrocities of the Holocaust, and to learn of the communities that lived in Poland prior to the Holocaust.
Late in 2008, however, SHOUT’s National Executive decided to take the organization in a new, more focused, direction. And so, SHOUT Canada, was formed.
Our Philosophy
We believe that ROR is more of a movement than a one time program. SHOUT Canada’s primary mandate is to help foster a generation of students with the power, voice and determination to affect societal change. We concede that this is a lofty goal. However, we are of a belief that social change is both possible and desirable. Possible, because we have seen through our experience with consecutive ROR programs how such educational opportunities can change and inspire people. Desirable, because Canadian young people want to be proactive and not reactive. As proven bythe successes of SHOUT Canada, the MRH, and ROR, Canadian students are both prepared and interested in visiting the sites of some of humanity’s most heinous crimes, as both a tool and a motivation to help create the more respectful and positive communities we all desire.
